You know you want some

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and whether you’re married, single, or something in between, you would probably like to get a little bit between now and then. I know you want some chocolate. It adds romance to almost anything. Reading a good book? Savor a slice of chocolate cake with a cup of coffee while turning the pages. It suddenly feels a bit decadent.

I have to mention some of my all-time favorite movies, which happen to be chocolate related, "Chocolat" and "Like Water For Chocolate." See these movies if you haven’t already. You’ll be glad you did! Not only do I love to write about food, but also I love to read food scenes in books and see food scenes in movies. I love food porn. I could watch these movies over and over, and have actually, but never grow tired of them. They are classics, like this cake. This cake is so smooth, rich, moist, and intensely chocolate. It’s not too sweet and is definitely for adults. This cake will satisfy your deepest and darkest chocolate cravings, well for a few hours at least.

I don’t know where I found the recipe. I have two notebooks full of recipes that I cut out of newspapers, magazines, or printed out from websites, which I taped to the pages in the notebook. Now I have recipes ready to jump out of a folder that is barely containing them. My most recent finds are piled onto my cookbooks. Some recipe management is definitely in order.

What I do know is that this recipe was named after a French exchange student named Elodie, who lived with an American family. This cake was all that she could cook. Because of my notebook, I’m guessing that I found this recipe between 1995 and 2002. Elodie must be at least in her twenties or thirties by now. I wonder what she ended up doing and if she still bakes this cake.

I’ve adapted the recipe and made it my own, but I’m definitely thankful to Elodie. Merci!

French chocolate cake

1 1/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/3 cup flour

1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

Dash of salt

1 cup of butter (softened)

1/2 tsp. vanilla

5 large eggs

For Decoration

1 T confectionary sugar

1/4 cup of chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine ingredients in bowl and mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake cake uncovered for 20 minutes. Then cover pan with foil and bake for another 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Uncover cake and cool in pan. The cake will fall as it cools. Sift the confectionary sugar over the cake and scatter the chocolate chips, as you like.

I have been blessed to have a dislike for chocolate. I know..it's odd, but I don't like the stuff. Thank goodness or I'd be a big old blob of it today!

However, I am surrounded by folks that love it so I WILL make this cake since it looks simple and will be a hit around here!

I can't TELL you how much Ken LOVED the movie "Chocolat"!!! I too LOVE "food scenes" in movies and "soul food" has the best of them ALL!!!

To this day I can't eat a greasy cheeseburger without remembering the scene in "Smokey and the Bandit" when Jackie Gleason, playing the sheriff, bites into a big burger at a bar. Watching "Iron Chef" would cause me to get off the couch and order take out before the show was over.

Food Porn...I'm glad to finally have a name for my affliction!!
