The Better Way Club

Posted by Pat Detmer on Oct 16th, 2007

Continuing with my There Are Two Kinds of People in This World theme:

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who pay attention to the lines in a parking lot, and those who don't.

My husband, The Sainted One, pays attention to the lines. I do not.

Oh, I do when it makes sense, like when the lot is full and vehicles are careening around corners. But when the parking lot has more spots empty than filled, when you can easily see all around you, when there's not another moving car in sight, why not break that solid white line in front of you? Why not pull forward instead of backing out if it gets you to your destination quicker?

Of course I speak as a lifetime member of the Better Way Club. My sisters are in the same club, and if you're headed somewhere in a car with us, I'll guarantee you that we'll know a Better Way to get where we're going. We consider this a loving and free service although our husbands might cautiously disagree. As The Sainted One once said after I delivered my personal Mapquest and the reason why my route was the better way: "It's amazing, really, that I manage to get anywhere on my own." He's also asked me how I plan on using all of these precious minutes that I've saved, and I've responded that I'll let him know when I find my new and more appreciative life mate.

In the same parking lot that I consider open range, The Sainted One will carefully back out of a space even if the nearest car is so far away that you'd need the Hubble Telescope to see it.

It's amazing that we're still together after twenty-two years.
