Rock 'n' Roll Grandma by Penny Valladares

Shine a light…

Posted by Penny Valladares on Apr 18th, 2008

Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying this beautiful spring weather. I’m so glad it’s finally here.

On April 4th, a documentary film by Martin Scorsese was released about the Rolling Stones called, "Shine A Light." Filmed in the fall of 2006, it shows the band performing at the famous Beacon Theatre in NYC. A few guests appear with them; the tremendous Christina Aguilera, Jack White of the White Stripes, and legendary bluesman, Buddy Guy. It’s being shown on the big IMAX screen, to bring it all to you larger than life. I haven’t seen it yet, but hope to this week.

New CD releases this spring:

Tom Petty has a new CD out with his new/old band. Mudcrutch was the name of the band Petty started out with way back before the Heartbreakers and recently he asked some of the members if they wanted to do a reunion album. At first they thought he was kidding, but finally realized he wasn’t and excitedly reunited. There are fourteen new songs and each member sings on at least one. It will be out on April 29th.

Steve Winwood is also releasing an album on April 29th called "Nine Lives." It’s a mix of Latin, gospel, bebop, and folk-rock-jazz elements, along with the addition of Eric Clapton who does a solo on the title cut. Winwood and Clapton recently did a few concerts together at Madison Square Garden in NYC and were a fabulous hit.

(By the way, Petty and Winwood are touring together this summer. Great combo!)

Neil Diamond releases a new CD on May 6th called "Home Before Dark." The mostly acoustic songs are more rhythmic than his last CD and some are dedicated to his young thirty-something girlfriend. His band includes Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and Diamond does a duet with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. He is also set to start a summer tour in late July or August.

Until next time, rock on and be excellent to each other… Penny
