What about me? by Dennis Anderson

The new Old Blue Eyes

Posted by Dennis Anderson on Jul 16th, 2007

After years of searching, I will now declare our generation’s Frank Sinatra.

This crooner is Sting, who, like, Sinatra, is a man’s man. Plus, he’s a rock star, cares for the environment and the oppressed, and loves his wife. If he could play some ball and deal a hand of poker he’d be perfect.

But even Old Blue Eyes wasn’t perfect.

Still, as Sinatra would say, Sting is having a very good year.

I came to pronouncement during a concert last week at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

There was Sting, leader of newly reformed band The Police, performing in front of 42,000 fans of a certain age, mostly 40 and older.

Sting is a legend, as much as Sinatra was in 1973 when he came out of “retirement” for a national television special that left a big impression on me when I watched it then as a preteen. I thought that this old guy in the tuxedo was cool the way he swayed and captivated his audience, including my parents who were sitting on the living room couch just feet away from me.

Sting, at 55, is just three years younger than Sinatra when he made that comeback special. He had the same control over his crowd last week as Sinatra did.

Both singers performed songs that were the soundtrack for a generation, songs that remain relevant today.

Now, my kids are singing and playing The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” and “Message In A Bottle” on PlayStation games such as Guitar Hero.

Makes me wonder who will be their Frank Sinatra.
