Monthly food clubs deliver edible ‘gifts that keep on giving’

If you’ve ever wanted muenster in your mailbox, this club’s for you.

It’s the Cheese of the Month Club, and for a mere $660, you can have 1 1/2 pounds of cheese per month delivered to your doorstep for a full year.

“I think people like to give gifts that keep on giving,” says Jessica Jaffe, product development director for Artisanal Cheese, which offers the club.

It’s one of dozens of “food of the month” clubs, also known as food subscription services, which are becoming popular gifts for the hard-to-shop-for-but-easy-to-feed crowd.

There’s one for just about anybody.

Want to keep it simple? Try the Pretzel of the Month Club ($120), or the Jerky of the Month Club ($58 for six months).

Have more refined tastes? Maybe the Lobster of the Month Club is up your alley. For $995.40, you can get four lobster tails delivered to your home each month for a year.

If you prefer the turf to the surf, you could belong to the Gourmet Entree Club from Omaha Steaks, which costs $779.76 to have enough steak to feed four adults delivered to your home for a year.

You’ll need some sauces to go on those steaks. BBQsauceofthemonth.com offers two different sauces each month for $346.80.

If spicy is more your thing, you could try the Salsa of the Month Club ($119.40). Of course, then you’d also need to subscribe to the Chips of the Month Club ($300).

For the more health-conscious, there is the Fruit of the Month Club, which, for $299.95, will send a different type of fruit to your house. Options include strawberries, grapefruit, tangelos and pears.

Or there’s the Avocado of the Month Club, which promises to send you an annum of avocados and avocado-related products for $225.95.

Some of the clubs are logistically more difficult than others. One of those is the Ice Cream of the Month Club, which will deliver four pints a month for six months, for $265. Yes, it does come frozen.

There are plenty of other dessert clubs. There are groups dedicated to cheesecake ($394.80), chocolates ($335.40), cookies ($359.40), cake ($275.40) and candy (various prices).

To wash down all the food, you can join the Tea of the Month Club ($275.40) or the Coffee of the Month Club ($311.40). (There also are clubs for wines and beers, but it’s more difficult to get those legally shipped to your house in some states.)

Haven’t found your perfect food subscription yet? You also could try boxed bacon, postal pickles, shipped soup or monthly mustard.

If you think all of this is nutty, you haven’t even seen the Nut of the Month Club.

And if you think this is just plain cheesy, we’d direct you back to the Cheese of the Month Club. Each month has a theme; recent themes have included sheep’s milk cheeses, French cheeses or cheeses that pair with a particular type of wine.

“We’ve always been on a mission to bring cheese to Americans,” Jaffe says. “We’re bringing cheese to people’s daily lives, and one way to do that is through the Cheese of the Month.”
