The holidays, already? The most wonderful time of the year seems to start earlier and earlier — so by the time you’re in the thick of it, you’re up to here with turkey and gingerbread and wrappings and relatives. Somewhere between drop-in visitors and trips to the airport, break away - and sneak in this casual spa get-together with girlfriends.
Now I’m not talking spa as in “expect high-tech beauty miracles.” It’s just a nice opportunity for a few smiling, herbal-scented hours with friends. During the holidays we’re often so tied up with family and visiting relatives that we miss casual camaraderie, so set aside this time to get together with your girls. They, too, will be grateful for the break from the holiday grind – make it simple and soothing, and you won’t even miss the mistletoe.
Steps for a soothing spa afternoon
1. No place like home for the holidays: Plan for before or after hosting other holiday events — and even if you’ve decorated for the holidays, your home will make a fine spa setting for friends. Choose a small to medium group of average stressed-out girls. Pick a weekend afternoon between holidays, set out lots of pillows and aromatherapy candles, put away the eggnog, and enjoy.
2. Invitation to bliss: Let your invites fill the senses and set the tone. On lavender paper, print up a little note with the date and details. Fold it over, tuck an emery board in, and spritz with lavender essence. Hand-address in matching envelopes. Let your friends know it’s the “Anti-Holiday Stress (and very casual dress!) Spa Party,” so there’s no mistaking it for just another holiday event. To complete the spa mood, invite them to bring robes and slippers.
3. Treats and treatments Go luxurious or go lower key. For a truly special treat, co-host the party with a few friends and split the cost of an in-home manicurist, pedicurist or massage therapist’s services. An indulgence, to be sure, but hey — you’re worth it.
If your wallet is still in holiday shock, stock up on beauty-supply treatments like masks and manicure supplies, set out fluffy towels, and let everyone go (calmly) wild. At the holiday sales, pick up a mini foot bubbler to soothe tired shoppers’ feet.
4. Sweet and low: Keep food light, easy, and a departure from regular holiday fare. Fresh fruit, crudite trays - finger sandwiches for the ambitious, hummus and pita for everyone else. Set out fluffy-cloud meringue cookies, available in groceries, and dainty chocolates for that bon-bon effect. Drinks: Champagne, of course, when padding around your pal’s house in a robe, slippers and jeans. For a nod to the season, offer shots of peppermint or cinnamon schnapps to spice up the bubbly. Keep a clear head with a selection of herbal teas and sparkling water.
5. One special thing: Ask your friends to check their cabinets for hotel and sample-size toiletries, and to bring them to the party. Put them all together and donate them to a local shelter or women’s transitional group — and you’ll feel as good as you look.
