Paint can be fairly cheap when seeking perfect color

Dear Mi-Ling: I need your help. I recently redecorated a few rooms at work and my boss loved them. Now, she wants me to do her office. She's giving me free rein but she wants me to keep her tan drapes. They have a thick deep orange border.

I am stuck over what color to put on the walls. She doesn't want anything too dark. Please help.

Dear Amanda: To find your boss's favorite color look at her wardrobe. Does she wear a lot of blue, orange or cream? If you pay close attention you should be able to find your inspiration in her clothing.

You could paint her wall a nice creamy beige and accent with orange, gold, or brown and tan. Orange also looks good with eggplant, sage green and gold. Chocolate is another option. Consider a coffee with cream color. This looks amazing with tan and orange.

Give her a few options. Buy a couple of quarts of paint and try out a few large sections on the wall. Paint is fairly cheap.

To add a punch of color to the room, consider sewing or hot gluing fringe or beads to the drape panels. There are some wonderful large chunky Moroccan-styled beads that are attached to fringe. Check your local fabric store.

If you still can't find the inspiration for your wall color, select a color from a painting or a multicolored rug or lamp shade.
