What are the essentials for an in-vogue wardrobe this season? To find out, we polled two stylish boutiques (ZouZou, Bella), two off-price stores (Marshalls, T.J. Maxx) and two upscale department stores (Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus). While prices range widely, the key elements do not. Any or all of the following will update your look through the coming months.
1. Trench coats or retro-inspired swing jackets with three-quarter sleeves.
2. Wide-leg trousers with a natural or high waist.
3. Plaids and patterns, especially houndstooth and herringbone.
4. Dresses in sheath, kimono, trapeze, chemise or sweater styles.
5. Structured handbags in exotic skins (real or faux).
6. Blouses with dramatic sleeves and/or bow-tie collars.
7. Ankle boots, high-heeled oxfords or flats worn with opaque hose.
8. Patent-leather, metallic or animal-print accessories, including gloves.
9. Wide-cuff bracelets.
10. Shades of gray, dark brown, purple, slate blue, curry or chili pepper.
