Paint is good, but now is the time to buy fireplace screen

Dear Mi-Ling: Is it possible to paint a fireplace screen? I have a polished brass screen and I think the finish is outdated. The room is traditional with wood floors — walls are painted a dark khaki color, red brick hearth, white crown molding and mantel. Is there a high-heat paint I could use? If so, what color?

Thank you for your help!

Dear Jane: Fireplace screens have come a long way. I am actually searching for a custom screen for one of my odd-sized fireplaces. I am having a difficult time locating a screen to fit a 42-inch-high fireplace. I have given up hope and I plan to have one custom made in the near future.

I'm sure you could repaint your fireplace screen but right now is a good time to buy one. After the holidays the prices come down. You can find a good-quality screen for $50 and up and even cheaper.

Go with a finish that is complementary to the finishes that you already have in your home. The choices are numerous, with pewter, antique bronze, copper and black just to name a few.

You can even select a fireplace screen that blends in with the theme of your home. There are Western themes with cowboys on the range. Others have a basket full of beautiful flowers.

When you're not burning your fireplace you can use a hand-painted wooden or metal screen designed just for show. I've seen them displayed with Easter and Christmas themes.

If you're adamant about keeping the one you have, take the screen to your local home improvement center or to a reputable paint store and seek advice.

Or, take this opportunity to update your space with a new and improved screen that will make your fireplace a true focal point.
