Dear Mi-Ling: I am renting an apartment. I have been trying to decorate on my own for the past six months and already have spent quite (a bit of) money without being able to make the place look much nicer. The basic furnishing is there but I need some cheap accessories or rearranging.
I don't know how to achieve a pleasant look. I don't want any painting, drilling or buying expensive furniture because it's only a rent apartment. Simple curtains, mats, plants are OK. Do you think you can advise me?

Dear Praveena: There is no need to spend a huge amount of money decorating your rental apartment. You are absolutely right — it's just a rental.
However if you shop wisely, you will be able take the items that you purchase with you when you move into your own home at some point.
Stay away from trendy items and stick with three basic colors that blend well together.
When it comes to arranging furniture most people make the mistake of pushing couches and chairs up against the wall.
To create a conversation area, bring your furniture closer together. You shouldn't have to shout across a room to speak with your guests or loved ones. A whisper should be sufficient.
Select basic curtains from a discount store and embellish them with beads or fringe. Use a hot glue gun and you'll be done in a flash.
Fill in your design with live or artificial plants. You can find them on sale at most discount chains.
Another idea is to ask a friend for a clipping from a plant and begin to grow your own.
In a few months you'll have filler for your new space.
