Dear Mi-Ling: We have three table lamps in our living room with fabric shades that are just the wrong color (too yellow in a room with shades of white and beige tones.)
We have been to a couple of lamp stores but we could not find replacements that work.
Can you think of any way we can do something to the existing shades?
Could they be painted or dyed?
I am not sure what the fabric is. It is sturdy, somewhat rough weave, possibly linen.
I would certainly appreciate any comments.

Dear Lucy: When you are looking for a lamp shade you must take the lamp base with you to the store.
It's hard to visualize how the shade will work without it.
I would leave the other shade at home so that you don't compare it with the new look.
Another option is to hot-glue fringe, beads or fabric to the shade.
I have spray-painted shades in the past but you can also recover the shade.
Most fabric or wallpaper stores carry a liner that will go over the existing shades and then you can attach the fabric.
However, this will usually block out some of the light.
I would try a few more lighting centers or even a home improvement center.
You should be able to find a basic color and then adorn it with beads and fringe.
You can also use fabric paint and a stencil for an unusual design.
