Could prairie skirts be making a comeback?

I've always loved CNN correspondent Jeanne Moos, but her story today has me giggling more than usual. It's worth a look, if only to check out Project Runway's Tim Gunn riffing on the "polygamist look" with the hilarious Mo Rocca. And for those of you who have been wondering where you can buy your very own prairie dresses - like the traffic-stopping fashions worn by the FLDS ladies - this Web site will be manna from heaven.

Now, you'll have to excuse me. I've got to go dig out my old prairie skirts from 1977. (I'm telling you, girls, never throw ANYTHING away.)

Marc Jacobs, are you listening?

Taking this seriously for just a moment (after enjoying the snarkiness), I'm inclined to celebrate this small step toward empowerment. I'm also inclined to be more sympathetic toward women whose fashion crime is modesty, because a whole lot err in the other direction, bad enough for adult women and pretty darn offensive when they're tarting up toddlers.

And — I admit to yearning for full skirts with elastic waists. ;)

Suzy, believe me, I am all in favor of the 'when in doubt, cover it up' approach - especialy for women over 50 and under 15. I'm not sure what you mean by 'small step toward empowerment,' though, as I don't think the FLDS women are the least bit empowered. But, in my morning snarkiness, it's entirely possible that I missed your point!

Not yours, Cathy; we've all been seeing it on TV for the better part of a week, and the video was far from the worst of it. Heaven forbid any of us "real women" should have to stand still for a New York fashion critique!

As for the empowerment, every little bit helps. Making and selling a product, even clothing for which I can't see much demand, provides small-business experience and contact with the rest of the world, and in turn those both open up more choices — not many, to be sure, but more than they've had.

That reminds me of a question I've wanted to ask you: What did you think of Sara Paretsky's "Bleeding Kansas"? I attended KU 30 years ago, but I came from north-central Kansas and so Lawrence looked to me like the big, liberal city. I was somewhat surprised to consider that the rural areas might have pockets of fundamentalism.

I live in Florida and I am still trying to conceive of wearing long underwear year round. A sure way to lose some weight!
