I've been hit with a miserable summer sinus infection so I'm crankier than usual, but the John Edwards "love child" story - breaking now on Fox News after the National Enquirer got the scoop - has me seeing red!
If the story is true - and I believe "innocent until proven guilty" should prevail here - John Edwards has just succeeded in bringing public disillusionment to a new level.
For the record, I was never in the "Edwards for President" camp. But I heard the man speak - flanked by his fabulous wife, Elizabeth, and their children - when he came through town as VP candidate four years ago. He was impossibly, boyishly good-looking, and an energetic speaker that drew rock star raves from the crowd. I remember wondering if he could be the next JFK.
Well, it now appears that he and JFK - and more politicians than I can count (on BOTH sides of the aisle) - may, indeed, have something in common: the inability to keep their zippers zipped!!
So, yeah, my head hurts, my sinuses ache and I'm seeing red. I'm angry because a man I thought was one of the "good guys" - if not necessarily a great candidate - has allegedly sunk as low as you can get, by cheating on his dying wife. I'm mad because, if the story is true, he was arrogant enough to think he could get away with it, at least until his wife wasn't around anymore. And I'm especially incensed because the story, while sad and disappointing, just isn't all that shocking anymore.

I was not even aware of this until today and felt intense disappointment at the possibility that Edwards could have done this horrible thing to Elizabeth. To me, he sort of symbolized the "Cute Guy" in high school that married the "Smart Girl" because he wasn't as shallow as everybody thought......I guess I was wrong! Even though I was a Hillary fan, this is very discouraging.
