Stayed home this morning long enough to catch "Miley Mania" on the Today show's Friday concert series. Having an adult daughter and no granddaughters, I've had only a passing interest in the Miley Cyrus phenomenon, and had never seen her perform.
Now that I have, I've got to admit the teen queen can really kick it!
You can't help but be impressed by a 15-year-old who can bring midtown Manhattan to a standstill, then deliver the goods like a seasoned pro (unlike Coldplay's pitiful performance a few weeks ago). I was pleasantly surprised by the restrained sexuality in her act, especially with so many young, young girls in the crowd (some of whom had been camping out on the plaza for THREE DAYS!)
Which leads us to the first entry in my "Oprah Gratitude Journal" today: I am grateful - VERY grateful - that no members of my immediate family are females between the ages of 4 and 16. My 'camping out for concert days' were over in 1975.
Have you accompanied a little girl to a Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana concert? Share if you dare!

I haven't, but my foolish daughter took a bunch of eight year olds to a concert, then invited them to stay for a sleep-over party. She said her ears were ringing for days afterwards.

Well, I've actually written one of my blogs on this subject, so I do have some experience.
I also watched the performance this morning with my 8 year old granddaughter, who saw Miley in concert in December. My husband and I asked her what she thought when it was over and she said, "ok". She seems to have moved on from Miley to the Jonas Brothers. Last year she chose 'Hannah Montana' school paraphernalia, but this year she has a backpack and lunch bag with the the very cute brothers on them.
I personally, didn't really like Miley's new songs. They are too grown up for her, especially the sappy love song. Even though she is a good performer, she really doesn't have an outstanding voice. And these new songs seem to expose that more than the earlier catchy pop songs.
I also thought the photos taken of her by Annie Leibovitz earlier this year were not done in good taste. She is only 15 after all, and appeals to a very young crowd, so those pictures weren't the smartest move.
They grow up soon enough as it is, let's not rush it.

I'm not familiar with her old pop songs, of course, and I guess I thought she had a limited "catalogue" - silly me. However, because of the Vanity Fair photos, I was expecting much more precocious sexuality. As for the Jonas Brothers, I HAVE seen them and I'll have to go with your granddaughter. They are WAY cute!! (Is that too cougarish of me?)
