Apparently, there are grown women in this world who play with eerily real-looking fake babies. They're called "Reborns," and the women dress, care for, even talk to them. There's a documentary on this weird phenomenon tonight on BBC America. Here's a preview from the Today show this morning.

This breaks my heart in a way. Some of them clearly just like dolls. Others are using them as a replacement for children they could never have. I did think the mother with a real two-year-old that carries the doll around in a carrier was a little strange.

I totally get the appeal even though it's a bit odd. Those fake babies look so real! If I had one, I'd probably talk to it all day, too. I think it appeals to those of us who don't want to lose our inner little girl and still play with dolls.

At first I was going to say that I'd prefer they volunteer for foster care, but a part of me thinks, "A woman who blurs the line between dolls and infants is not going to be a good foster parent to a needy child."
