Kudos to Barack Obama who unequivocally made the case for leaving 17-year-old Bristol Palin alone in the wake of news of her pregnancy.
“People’s families are off-limits and people’s children are especially off-limits,” he told reporters on the campaign trail. “This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as a governor or potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories,” he added.
He also reminded the press, and us, that he was born to a teen-aged mother.
Still, the debate about teen pregnancy, and sex education in schools, is sure to rage on, and it will be fascinating to hear both candidates address it, while dancing around Bristol Palin's personal circumstances.
I have lots of questions, of course, including what kind of mother-daughter conversation took place when it became clear that said daughter's embarrassing moment was about to be exposed to the world.

I thought about that, too. Every one is talking about what Gov. Palin told McCain and when. What I'd like to know is what she told Bristol and how much input Bristol had in exposing her secret to the media. I feel sorry for that little girl and an among those Republicans who are very concerned about our candiates'decision-making process.

There but for the grace of God go all of us who've ever raised teenagers.

Yes and no, though. "Good" families who've taught their children well still have unexpected grandchildren. I disagree with just about all of Sarah Palin's politics, but I don't think we can assume we know how this came about.

We can't judge what we don't know. We can only accept that it's none of our business and move on.
