Where do real women like YOU shop for clothes?

Here's a story from Forbes on how retailers are missing the boat when it comes to dressing boomer women, which begs the question: Assuming Baby Boomers are the ones supporting a $1.6 billion per year anti-aging skin care industry, why aren't more clothing stores getting on the BoomerGirl bandwagon?

I normally avoid clothes shopping like the plague, but there are enough ill-fitting tops and bottoms in my closet that I've been forced into it. It's 35 miles to the nearest major department store and, with money and time at a premium, I'm interested in where you have the best luck finding stylish and modern clothes. (No elastic waistbands, please.) Keeping Sherrie Mathieson's suggestions for timeless fashion looks in mind, I'll be hitting the racks this weekend and would appreciate any guidance you can give me.

I've always had good luck at resale and consignment shops. There aren't so many choices that it's overwhelming and the prices are right.

Ann Taylor outlet. Sometimes Banana Republic. Also an outlet. For dresses, go to the biggest Macy's you can find.

I have been successful w. catlog shopping sometimes - I recommend Victoria's Secret catalog (YES, they have clothes as well as underwear!), Chadwick's and Newport News. I have gotten some great stuff there. As to stores, I can usually shop Macy's, Nordstrom, Ann Taylor & Ann Taylor Loft with some luck too. I'm a big shopper at the discount places like Ross, Marshall's and TJ Maxx. But I agree with you on the selection. Sometimes it's just WAY too "matronly" for me!

For the past year I've been shopping at J. Jill. I sometimes order out of the catalog and occasionally shop in their store which is about a 40 minute drive. I love the selection and if you catch their post season sales and clearance, the deals are great. You can order the catalog online. I like to look through it first before ordering or shopping. Also do a search for online coupons before ordering.

I can spend hours in Macy's and not find a thing. Coldwater Creek is alright but a lot of the styles are too old ladyish for me. Dress Barn is worth a look through.

Thanks, everybody! Don't tell anyone but I sometimes score at Old Navy. For some reason, their pants seem to fit me, and the prices are recession-friendly!

I find some great things on EBay. If I find something I like from Garnet Hill or BCBG, I will then look for it on EBay. I have purchased a couple of NEW Michael Stars tees for a fraction of retail price.
