Dear Mom,
Thanks for showing up at my football and basketball games, getting me involved in Scouts, making sure I took “Industrial Arts” in school and numerous other roles normally taken on by a father of a boomer child.

In the first months following my mother's death in the spring of 2003, our one-sided chats at Green Lawn were awkward affairs. I carried the baggage of unfinished business and unspoken love to a glistening headstone of cinnamon-hued granite and simply stared at the etched symbols and words — the first few notes and lyrics of her favorite hymn.

Everyone tells you to say the things you want to say so there are no regrets. I just couldn’t keep my composure when she was giving me instructions of what to do when she was gone. I just couldn’t. It was confirmation that our time was about up.

The beginning of a new spring semester always brings thoughts of spring semesters past. Right now, I am thinking of the one just past, in 2006. Looking back, I know that Misty wondered if she would hang on until summer vacation started. She knew, certainly, that this semester would be her last.
