Suds up your cocktails

As we warm up for this summer, I can't help but think about last year's party scene. The end of the summer brought scorching heat and the last party of the season. Boy, was it hot! The sangria helped, but it was still at least 90 degrees as the party wore on. Enter Courtney with the perfect cool-down cocktail: the Pink Panty Pulldown!

Repairs send household into pioneer era
May. 9th — I’ve developed a new appreciation for the trials of my pioneer foremothers, even if my own compromised situation is a long way from replicating theirs. Contractors working in our basement removed our hot water heater and furnace last week. Then, intermittent wet weather extended a three-day project into an ordeal of indefinite duration.

Xeriscaping: Think plants, not rocks

Petite? Not at all
The ‘John Wayne of grapes' attracts cult following with its rough and ready flavor
May. 3rd — There's nothing wee or precious about petite sirah, a red wine that has been compared, seriously, to John Wayne and whose big, bold profile is at odds with its diminutive name. Help! What went wrong?
May. 8th — Everyone does it sometime. You're following a recipe to the letter. And yet .... SOMETHING GOES WRONG. The fudge fails. The roast is tough. The sauce breaks. "What did I do?" you moan — and thus begins the search for the cause of the mess.

The test of time and time again
May. 5th — Seems to me almost all recipes are ripped off. A gentler way to look at it is that all recipes are borrowed, or taken in, like stray kittens. You may not conceive a recipe, but a favorite stands so tall in your heart that you feel for it a tremendous sense of ownership, not to mention gratitude to those who owned it before you.

Ditch the lime and salt
Real tequila is for sipping and savoring
May. 4th — If you think "fine tequila" is an oxymoron, you're thinking is stuck in the last millennium. We encourage you to taste some before you start stocking your liquor cabinet for the summer. A good silver tequila in the right drink can kick-start a cocktail party.

For some gardeners, naked is the way to go
May. 3rd — Whoa! I had no idea nude gardening was such a popular pastime. I must have been living under a rock all this time, fully clothed, of course.
