AARP redefining "old"

I got my AARP card a few weeks before my 50th birthday. I was not amused. Two-and-a-half years later, I'm fascinated by the paradigm shift happening in the AARP - and society, in general - with regards to what (and who) is considered "old"...if anyone even uses the word anymore.

This is how I want to retire: Lounging on a chaise with a great book and an ocean view, getting up only for a round of golf, Spanish lesson, or to volunteer at the local animal shelter. But is the notion of retirement only pie in the sky?

My daughter has graduated from college and, God willing, she will be on someone else's payroll soon. No matter what she is paid by any much-hoped-for employer, I will be getting a raise. One of my friends pointed out that my disposable income could double when Jessie gets a job.

It's been years since I identified myself simply as Steve's wife or Tom's mother. Almost 40 years, in fact. Instead, I have identified myself as a reporter, a journalist, a writer, a book author, a television host, even the founder of a nonprofit group for women at midlife.
