Ditto. But as a new Kansan recently transplanted from East Texas, I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm fortunate to live in a liberal college town now, and for the first time in my life, I don't feel like I'm swimming upstream.
I volunteer for the local visual arts guild (heavily) and the local public radio station during fund drives and other special events. I also plan to begin volunteering for an at-risk kids' program later this summer when my current schedule eases. I want to do things that matter to me and others, and it's been a great way to meet people in a community that's new to me.
Oh, how I know what she's talking about. It's like living in sludge. I don't feel that hormone replacement therapy is an option for me, so I'm resigned to handling it through stress reduction, sleeping as well as I can manage, and so on. I know I should walk, but YIK.
