Each year at Thanksgiving we fill out a little card detailing what we're thankful for and put it in a basket. At the dinner table, the basket is passed around, each person pulls a card from it, and the message is read aloud. Then we guess who might have written it.
I've just spent several weeks going through old pictures from my mother's estate. (Yes, she died over six years ago, but I've been busy.) Having viewed these photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s, I'm feeling very back-to-basics in my thankfulness. I know that this won't fit on the Thankful card tomorrow, but I'm feeling so grateful that I'll share them with you.
I'm thankful for:
- Indoor toilets.
- Cars that you don't start by cranking.
- Phones that you don't start by cranking.
- Washers where you don't need to create your own spin cycle by cranking.
- Clothing that breathes and allows you to move.
- The lack of a need for hat pins.
- Dental hygienists and braces.
- Water that you can get without pumping.
- Food that you can eat without killing it first.
- Indoor toilets.

And I'm grateful for wild-and-crazy columnists who keep me smiling like Pat!
