I was not a young mommy. After one daughter, 4 1/2 years passed before the second daughter, and then another seven years before daughter 3. In my late thirties I can remember telling other moms, younger moms, the theory I came to formulate:
One is like None, Two is a Family, and Three, all hell breaks loose!
This Christmas one of my female students gave me a “Sisters” portrait Christmas card. Stunning!All three girls, beautiful, happy, smiling, in one picture! “What an amazing portrait,” I said in my thank you card. “However did you manage to get all three girls in one place, at one time, all looking great? Congratulations”
Well, that’s where we are right now. Including myself, getting all four girls together for our blog right now is going to be sheer luck. Please allow me to draw an analogy to the portrait gathering experience.
One of us got a little something stuck in her hair and when she went to the stylist to get it cut out, she got the most hideous haircut you can imagine. So bad that it’s going to take a few months before we can ask her to be in a portrait unless she has just one really good hair day.
One is getting her braces off soon, so we are just going to have to wait because she cannot be expected to be in a portrait right now when her beautiful smile is so close to beaming!
One is having a slight complexion problem. Just as one blemish clears up, another appears, right on her cheek or chin, someplace she can’t hide from the camera.
Taking a portrait right now could be a pretty unique picture, but likely the kind that others would lie about. “Oh, it’s not so bad…It’s a lovely picture… What a cute smile…” You know those white lies!
So, altogether, we are not such a lovely portrait right now.But we know that one day in the near future, we’ll all be beautiful, lift our chins, look right in that lens, and say “CHEESE!”

I wish you all the luck in the world! You are really wise to start early! Please share your tips when mission accomplished. I can't even get my Two teenage girls happy about their looks at the same time. Maybe this is mean but one year i just may send out a picture of me and the pet dog with the Christmas cards! Or maybe me with my friends who can't get their kids all together for a portrait either!!
